CENSUS –
COUNT PEOPLE,
COUNT YOUR SHEETS

This is the 230th year of the Census, a count done by the federal government (per the Constitution) which generates statistics used for local funding for roads, schools, hospitals and senior centers, used for determining representation, used by non-profits who help sectors of the population, used by businesses to determine where to locate, etc.

I have been helping by working for the US Census Bureau, in between selling at Farmers Markets, and supplying sheets to my past customers.

WHAT HAVE I FOUND INTERESTING:

There are whole neighborhoods that I never knew existed, little gardens and courtyards, little pockets of humanity. As we go about our business to work, to shop or to church, we never set foot on certain streets, in certain apartment complexes, or in certain gated communities. We have a wealth of fellow Americans, and all manner of housing.

HOW ARE THE RESIDENTS?

As you know, most people are kind and helpful. Given how hot it has been, I am often offered bottles of water. One woman insisted I take baklava, and a man gave me a box of fine European candy. Many people are willing to do their part to help provide information for the Census, which benefits our community.

WHAT WAS THE STRANGEST OBSERVATION?

As I went about knocking on doors, I found it odd that quite a number of families have shoes or sandals on their front porch, many times with well-manicured front lawns. Perhaps this is to keep dirt outside to protect the carpet, or to keep the smell of feet outside, or maybe some ritual I am not familiar with (enlighten me if so.) I come from the mid-West, where it was common to greet your guests with a hanging plant on the porch, a decorative yard ornament, a porch swing, etc. But here, a bunch of worn shoes?

SOFT SHEETS

I continue to supply soft, comfortable sheets to each of the beds in my community, so, while participating in counting the people in your household for the Census, take a moment to count the sheets to see if you need more. If so, give me a call.

Sincerely,

Rebecca
